FINDING US

Getting to Mercury House

Mercury House sits on Shangani Street, one of Stone Town’s most iconic seafront streets, just steps from the Indian Ocean. It is easily reached on foot from most Stone Town hotels, and clearly marked with the Freddie Mercury Museum sign on its carved wooden door.

Getting to Zanzibar

Zanzibar is well connected internationally. Abeid Amani Karume International Airport (ZNZ) receives direct flights from Nairobi, Dar es Salaam, Addis Ababa, Dubai, and several European cities. Stone Town is approximately a 20-minute taxi ride from the airport.

Alternatively, regular high-speed ferries connect Dar es Salaam with Zanzibar in roughly two hours. The ferry terminal in Stone Town is a short walk from Mercury House.

Once You’re in Stone Town

Stone Town is compact and best explored on foot. Mercury House is in the Shangani area, the historic seafront quarter. From the ferry terminal it is approximately a 10-minute walk, and within easy walking distance from most Stone Town hotels. We recommend searching “Freddie Mercury Museum Zanzibar” on Google Maps for directions.

AT THE MUSEUM

What You'll Find

The Photographs

Rare images tracing every stage of Freddie’s life: from his earliest years on this island to the stages of the world’s greatest arenas.

The Artefacts

Original costumes, personal objects, and handwritten notes on display, each accompanied by the context that places it in his story.

The Atmosphere

There is something about standing in the rooms where Farrokh Bulsara grew up that no documentary or album can replicate.

WHILE YOU’RE IN STONE TOWN

Make a Day of It

Stone Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of East Africa’s most extraordinary places. Mercury House sits in the Shangani area, within walking distance of the seafront, the Old Fort, the House of Wonders, and the carved wooden doors that define the town’s architecture.

We recommend setting aside a full day: visit the museum in the morning, explore the old town through the afternoon, and watch the sun set over the Indian Ocean from the seafront.
